Forschung

Meine Forschungsinteressen konzentrieren sich auf die Paarungs- und Sozialsysteme der Primaten. Im Besonderen interessieren mich die ökologischen und sozialen Faktoren, welche die Verteilung von Männchen und Weibchen bestimmen sowie die sich daraus ergebenden Konsequenzen für Fortpflanzungsstrategien und genetische Populationsstruktur. Sexuelle Selektion und life history-Theorie liefern dabei den Rahmen für meine spezifischen Interessen für Konvergenzen in der sozialen Evolution der Lemuren. Innerhalb dieses größeren Rahmens arbeite ich an Projekten, die sich mit Sozialverhalten, Sexualdimorphismus, Spermien-konkurrenz und elterlichem Investment bei Lemuren und anderen Halbaffen beschäftigen. Den Beziehungen und Konflikten zwischen den Geschlechtern gelten dabei meine besonderen Interessen. In Langzeit-Freilandprojekten untersuchen meine Studenten und ich die Sozialsysteme von solitären (Microcebus murinus, M. berthae, Mirza coquereli), Paar- (Lepilemur ruficaudatus, Phaner furcifer) und  Gruppenlebenden (Eulemur fulvus rufus, Propithecus verreauxi) Lemuren, aber auch von madagassischen Raubtieren, Vögeln und Reptilien. Wir benutzen genetische Methoden, um die Fortpflanzungsstrategien und die genetische Struktur von Gruppen und Populationen zu erforschen. Nicht-invasive physiologische Methoden  kommen zum Einsatz, um endokrinologische Korrelate von Verhaltens- und Fortpflanzungsstrategien zu untersuchen.

Ich besitze die Prüfungsbefugnis für Zoologie und Anthropologie und biete Lehrveranstaltungen zu den Bereichen Verhaltensbiologie, Evolution, Methodik und evolutionäre Anthropologie anbiete. Siehe: Lehre
